An Unfamiliar World

This new work continues my involvement with the geography of Italy and moves from the quarries of Carrara to the city of Rome. It is in some ways a reaction to the 18th century concept of the sublime. When I am at work in the landscape I am constantly reminded of the volatility of this aesthetic approach. How, as an artist, do you make something truthful and attractive without diminishing the experience of contemporary life? My process falls somewhere between attempting the beautiful and accepting the sublime.

These locations all display the forces and irregularities of growth, change and decay due to natural or human causes. While making these photographs I was reminded of two statements that I came across in my readings; one by the pre-Socratic Greek philosopher Heraclitus who wrote, “ The most beautiful world is like a heap of rubble tossed down in confusion.” and the other by the artist Robert Smithson who observed “…the gardens of history are being replaced by the sites of time.”
