I am drawn to the sheer physicality of making a painting and the tactile engagement of materials. I am drawn to the color blue.
This body of work is from a series of paintings called Breaking Light.
The glazing technique of J.M.W. Turner, the primitive impulse and material expressiveness of Cy Twombly, and the quiet and subtle rigor of Agnes Martin influences me.
There are many passages on the painting surface. Oil glaze, wax emulsions, marble dust or iridescent pigment begin to build the layering process. Markings or scratches break the picture plane sometimes exposing the bare bones of the canvas. Additional passages of thick wax and oil glaze sometimes move the textured surface between luminous and opaque areas. Repetition of this process creates a dialogue between disclosure and concealment, impulse and restraint, revelation.
