Will Berry, Untitled, 2013, 23/24 K gold leaf & carbon, 15 3/4 x 12 inches
Mexico City artist Will Berry is known for his sumptuous abstract paintings in lead white, graphite, and oxidized aluminum leaf. He continues an exploration of light in his new series of gold panels recalling ancient worship of the sun. These shimmering images belie a complex technique in which a spirituality is invoked, not only by the implications of its materials and process but by having as source ancient abstract geometries, Renaissance and Baroque motifs-including Mexican Vice-Regal traditions.

Carbon drawings are used as a structuring device, creating a particular space in each panel, a pretext for an investigation of light, the reflection of light, and the chemistry of contamination when carbon and gold are temporally fused- a reference to an on-going interest in Mestisaje, “the great and ever present cultural reality of fusion spurred by Colonialism, the Era of Discovery and Exploration that first made the world a global entity, circulated people, objects, and ideas across the planet.”
(Victor Zamudio-Taylor, 2013)
