NIGHT LIGHT: BY KATHLEEN MARKOWITZ AND LOVE TEXT: A SPECIAL EXHIBITION OF LOVE NOTES AND CONTEMPORARY VALENTINES OPENS AT THE PAGE BOND GALLERY FEBRUARY 5, 2010

The Page Bond Gallery is pleased to present new works by Kathleen Markowitz in conjunction with Love Text: a small works group exhibition with a nod to Valentine’s Day, featuring works by gallery artists. Additionally Cold Press, a group exhibition of prints by national and international artists, has been extended and will remain on view through February. These works will be at the Page Bond Gallery, 1625 West Main Street with an opening reception honoring the artists, Friday, February 5, 2010 from 7 to 9 PM. The exhibition will remain on view through Saturday, February 27, 2010.

Night Light: Any device serving as a source of illumination.

In this latest exhibition of works on paper by Kathleen Markowitz, light is her overarching subject. Juxtaposing dark black and blue hues next to bright white, these works emit an illusory glow. The series is divided by works on a deep blue ground with speckled clusters of light, and works on a multilayered black ground displaying boxy points of illumination. Although there are no definitive references to the source of this light, a conversation around natural and artificial is imminent.

Markowitz studied art at Virginia Commonwealth University and the New York School of Visual Arts in Barcelona, Spain. She was the recipient of the Julia and David White Artist’s Colony fellowship in Ciudad Colón, Costa Rica and shows her work internationally. Most recently, the Tashkent 5th International Biennale of Contemporary Art, Artificium of Humanitas, in Uzbekistan represented her work. Markowitz has also shown extensively in the United States, in and around Richmond, Virginia.

Contemporary prints being shown at the gallery as a part of the group exhibition, Cold Press, incorporate a variety of print techniques including intaglio, lithographs, engraving, embossing, screen prints, aquatint, the patented Mixografia process, among others. Artists include, Polly Apfelbaum, John Baldessari, Ross Bleckner, Mel Bochner, Caio Fonseca, Helen Frankenthaler, Lucian Freud, Mary Heilmann, Ellsworth Kelly, Patsy Krebs, Martin Puryear, Ed Ruscha, Richard Serra, Julião Sarmento, Joel Shapiro, Amy Sillman, Donald Sultan, Randy Toy, Terry Winters, and Peter Wüthrich.
