EMERGE: WORK BY RECENT VCUARTS MFA CANDIDATES AND GRADUATES AT PAGE BOND GALLERY, JUNE 7 TO JULY 9, 2018.

Page Bond Gallery is pleased to present EMERGE, an exhibition of new work by VCU MFA candidates and recent graduates including Diana Antohe, Sasha Baskin, Hannah Bates, Marie Fornaro, Isa Newby Gagarin, Emily Kuchenbecker, Jubee Lee, William Lenard, Jubee Lee, Mitch Paster, Greg Piwonka, Cait Porter, Johanna Robinson, and Michael Royce. The exhibition opens with a reception on Thursday, June 7 from 6-8pm and is on view through July 9.

Sasha Baskin is a textile artist and recent MFA graduate from VCU’s Craft and Material Studies program. She received her BFA in Drawing from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Using natural dye and traditional weaving processes in combination with digital weaving technology, Baskin “addresses the drive to create idealized simulations in order to better understand one’s own reality and identity.” Baskin’s thesis work explored the phenomenon of the rose in The Bachelor and re-imagined the rose as a symbol of empowerment and agency for the women depicted.

Mitch Paster is an MFA candidate in VCU’s Photography and Film department. Paster utilizes various digital technologies along with film to create abstract images with an emphasis on color and composition. The images in his Echoes series feature various soft, out-of-focus bars of colors against solid colored backgrounds. Recent work has included a process similar to monotyping, followed by digital manipulation to create layered, energetic images. Paster’s work deals with “the role of color as a retinal and physical experience,” made possible by the “centrality of photography in image-making and the rise of digital technology.”
